diy Wonka birthday party

If you follow me on Instagram then you know I was busy last week preparing for my daughter's 9th birthday party Wonka style.  Today I'm sharing all the details, sources and how to on everything I made for this diy wonka birthday party.

Let's start with the invites: wonka bars.  If you search the internet there are multiple wonka graphics out there, find one you like and then use picmonkey to make the candy bar wrappers.

D is for Decorator Letters

diy knock off decorator letters

Grab your jigsaw and some plywood because you can definitely DIY these decorator letters.  They make a huge statement for very minimal cost (and a fun birthday gift for my daughter's friend too!).

Inspired by Pottery Barn Kids Decorator Letters:

Their letters cost $79 each, that's crazy talk too me!  (To do the math 4 letters would be $316 - are you kidding?)  I used 1/2" plywood scraps to make my version but all you need for one letter is a 1/2" plywood handy panel (2' x 4') which runs about $15.  You might even be able to fit two letters on one panel if you're lucky.  Also you could use 1/2" MDF which is cheaper and makes those curvy cuts super smooth.

Heather from Queen of Everything sent me the following items:

thrift store items to repurpose

What a great collection she sent!  The little copper pan is beautiful.  The task was to repurpose the items so I took the wood trivet and made it into a marker holder:

S is for Stenciled Wood Wall Art

diy stenciled wood wall art

diy stenciled wood wall art

I'm participating in the 10 Days of Valentines challenge with Porch and Valspar paint whereby I was to create a diy project using marsala paint and a mystery item from Porch.

As you can see the mystery item was a stencil and this diy gal never uses stencils but I was up for the challenge.

I used the stencil in a tile like fashion to make this wood wall art which resembles a quilt.  I love the intricate detail of the stencil and the delicate nature of the shapes.

T is for Turf Projects

diy turf projects

Since a majority of us still have snow on the ground and it doesn't look like Spring will be here anytime soon I thought it would be a good time to share some diy turf projects.  If we can't even see the real grass then we might as well bring out the fake stuff!  Follow are 4 fun projects using astroturf.

Astroturf is relatively inexpensive - one large 6' x 8' piece is under $20 and you can get a lot of projects from that one piece.  I've also seen smaller 3' x 5' rug sizes and even the little 4" square samples could be used to make coasters.

S is for Spilling the Beans Q A

Something out of the ordinary today - I was asked by Porch to do a question and answer style post.  And since I rarely talk personal here's your chance to get to know a little more about me!

If you haven't heard of Porch yet they are an online network where you can find the right professionals with referrals for all your home projects.  It's a grand home improvement network for those projects that are beyond DIY, Porch helps you find reputable peeps.

For this Q & A I'll be answering a few questions here and then you'll want to click over to the Porch Advice Blog to read the other juicy half.

What's your DIY weapon of choice?

Sliding compound miter circular saw

My real weapon of choice is my hands, they're invaluable to me so don't drill through your pointer finger ever!  It really hurts and the nerve took 2 months to come back.

Words of wisdom for someone remodeling on a budget?

Use what you have first and foremost.  I always shop my house first including my basement which is full of cast offs and wood scraps.  Lots of things can be transformed into something else with a little imagination, maybe rebuild it or add some paint.  I like to pretend there is a zero budget, collect everything I have and can use for the remodel and then make the purchases that I really want.

What's the weirdest thing you've collected?

Railing spindles.

No project plans yet but I'm holding on to them because they're so skinny, twisty and spindly.

G is for Gumball Machine

diy gumball machine kids craft

Time to raid the scrap wood pile again to make this simple gumball machine.  Now technically it's not a machine but more of a candy jar however it does make an easy craft for a kids birthday party and that is my goal here.
