DIY Handpainted Sign

Happy Friday friends!  Sharing how to make a handpainted sign today without using fancy stencils or a vinyl cutting machine.  A few weeks back I posted this new wall art I had made on Instagram and many folks had asked if I would share a tutorial.  Below are the steps to make this planked sign with handpainted lettering, if you can color in the lines then I promise you can make this.

I choose this quote because 1) I recently saw it in the March 2015 issue of Country Living magazine 2) I'm a long time Little House on the Prairie fan and 3) we needed some wall art in that spot after the tree shelf from Christmas came down.

Growing up I wanted to be Laura Ingalls, life on the prairie was so basic and simple and I loved everything about her rustic family lifestyle.  That might explain a little bit of why I choose to buy a 1740 saltbox farmhouse, living out my inner Laura every day (except with indoor plumbing).

At any rate back to the sign.  You can make it any size to fit your space.  I joined a couple 1scrap 1x6 and 1x8 boards to get the width I wanted and cut them all to the same length.

What To Include In A Childs Art Box

Making an art box for your child is a great way to help them learn about the world around 
them and also introduce them to the world of art. A collection of age appropriate art 
supplies is an essential fun learning toy for any child and will help them learn about colors, 
shapes and textures, as well as introduce them to different arts and crafts materials. Help 
feed your toddler’s desire to explore their world with a collection of art and craft supplies in 
their very own art box!

Above all, anything you include in your toddlers art box should first and foremost be safe. 
That means any art or craft supplies included in their box should be non-toxic and have no 
sharp edges or harmful chemicals. Be sure to read and adhere to age recommendations for 
any art supplies that you include in your toddler’s art box. Also, no matter how safe or 
harmless the materials you include in your art box seem to be, be sure to always supervise your children during their art playtime.

All you need to get started is an old sturdy shoe box or inexpensive plastic tote to hold your 
art supplies. Minimize mess by including an art smock or old t-shirt that your toddler can 
wear to protect their clothing. Include a variety of craft items that will help introduce your 
child to color, shapes, and textures. These items can be found at most craft stores, but take a 
look around your home and you will most likely find some cost-free additions! 
Here are my suggestions for some supplies that you may want to include in your childs  
art box:

Items that introduce a child to color:

Introduce your child to the world of color by including crayons, washable markers, colored 
pencils,  finger paints, and different colored construction paper in your art box.

Items that introduce a child to shapes:

Items that help introduce your child to the world of shapes include wooden Popsicle 
sticks, wooden cut-out flat shapes such as circles, squares, and triangles, that are about 
four inches or larger in size and that can be painted or colored are available at most craft stores and are a great way to teach your toddler about shapes. Peel-off sticker-back foam shapes are also a toddler favorite for sticking on construction paper.

Items that introduce a child to texture:

Things that introduce your child to the world of texture include pieces of felt, lengths of yarn and ribbon, material scraps, construction paper, clay or play-doh, pipe cleaners, feathers, pom-poms and cotton balls. 

Dont forget! 
Other essentials for your art box include washable glue, a glue stick, masking tape,
stickers, coloring books, tissue paper, a ruler, and simple, traceable stencils. 

With a little guidance from you and their own imagination, an art box is a wonderful way to entertain your toddler and help them learn all about art! Check out some of the neat family

Hungarian Goulash With Homemade Noodles Beef Stew Recipe

Im gonna warn you from the start - this is real comfort food! If theres anything that this is not, its not low carb/watching your waistline/lightweight fare. This is soul-satisfying, hot on a cold day, filling, and healing for your biggest heartbreak type-food. 

Its December, and its time for homemade Hungarian goulash. Use a big pot, and make a lot, enough so that you have it to eat for at least three days. If you dont, you will wish that you had. This is my grandmothers recipe as my mother taught me how to make it. And although its not written down anywhere in any cookbook or on any recipe card in our homes, its engraved in our hearts. This recipe makes enough for a big potful, and I usually pack up a container to share with another family member or friend, and my two daughters and I still have plenty left over to enjoy for a few days. The homemade noodles are an optional addition, but only add even more delicious goodness to this recipe. Enjoy!

In a large soup pot, melt about 2-3 tablespoons of solid shortening on medium-high heat on your stove-top. I use Crisco solid shortening. 

I use two pounds of beef stew cubes or sirloin cubes. You can cut the entire recipe in half if you like and only use one pound. I go through the beef cubes and cut down any that are too large into smaller sized pieces. 

Add the beef cubes to the heated shortening to brown them, mixing well while they cook. Browning the steak cubes is what will help create a rich gravy that is the base of the stew. 

Once all of the steak cubes are evenly browned, add water to cover them. (This photo was taken before I covered the cubes with water.) Cook until fork-soft.

Peel and chop a few carrots and set aside. We will add those later because if we put them in too soon they will break down too quickly. 2-3 carrots are usually enough but I always add a couple extra just because I love carrots. 

Chop 1 stalk of celery and one medium sized onion. Add the celery and onion to the pot with the steak cubes, continuing to cook over medium heat. 

Wash and peel 3-4 medium sized potatoes and then cut into large cubes. Put the potato cubes into a separate pot, add water until potatoes are covered, and boil for about 10 minutes until cooked.  

Add the carrots to the pot with the steak cubes, celery and onion. Once the potatoes have finished cooking, add the potatoes AND about half of the water that you cooked the potatoes in to the main pot with the steak cubes, carrots, celery and onion. Stir. 

Simmer the goulash on low heat. To thicken the broth, add 3T of flour to 1/2 cup of COLD water and mix well until all flour is dissolved. Add water/flour mixture to the soup pot and mix well. Season with salt and pepper to taste. If I make a lot of broth with my goulosh then I  also like to add 2-3 individual packets of G. Washingtons Rich Brown Seasoning broth mix to boost the flavor. Add 1 tablespoon of Hungarian paprika and mix well. (You can add additional paprika if you like.) Cover the goulash and simmer on low heat, stirring occasionally while you make the homemade noodles.

Now make the noodles! 

In a mixer add 2 eggs, 1 teaspoon of salt, 2 cups of flour, and about one half cup of cold water. Mix well until the dough is sticky and soft. 

This dough is perfect! 

Heat a pot of water to a rolling boil. I use a pasta pot with a draining insert. This makes it easy to remove the noodles when they are finished cooking. Once the water is boiling you will use a teaspoon to add half-teaspoon sized dollops of dough to the boiling water. 

Adding dough to the boiling water. You will need to use your finger to remove the dough from the spoon. I couldnt do that while taking the photo! I try to stretch out each dollop of dough so that it makes a longer, thinner noodle. Repeat this process until all of the dough is used up.

Stir the noodles with a wooden spoon. They cook in a just a minute or two, so by the time you are finished adding all the dough to the pot they are usually finished cooking. 

Here are some noodles that are the ideal size. 

Remove the noodles from the pot and drain, then add them directly to the stew.

Slice some crusty bread and serve with butter.

Getting Ready For The Holiday Rush Everyone In The Family Helps Out

The holidays are just around the corner and I
am doing my best to stay ahead of the game! 

Ive been busy ordering last minute jewelry 
supplies and packaging, and getting everyone 
in the house to help out in some way. Im also 
waiting for word from my publisher that my 
two new jewelry instruction videos have been

released. It should be any day now! Yay!

My daughter Erica puts labels on jewelry boxes while kitty Sara keeps a close eye on quality control.

Having family members (namely your kids!) help out
with small tasks for your business or Etsy shop 
is a great way to bond while doing something that benefits
everyone in the family. When my girls help out with making 
packaging, or a similar task, we always have a good time talking
 and laughing, and they are learning about small parts of business, 
and also what it means to be a family and to help each other. 
Plus they love being a part of everything!
